The Renaissance

The term Renaissance refers to a rebirth of European art that originated in Italy in the 15th century. It is intimately linked to Humanism and the rediscovery of ancient literature, philosophy and science. Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphaël and Michelangelo were all emblematic figures of the Renaissance. From the end of the 15th century, Italian style spread throughout Europe where it was integrated into local arts, such as in Flanders for example. In France a classical style developed, combining Italian influences and national traditions.
